Symbols are important, but they don't fully reflect all the hard work that goes into a pea
Symbols are important, but they don't fully reflect all the hard work that goes into a peace process. Beyond doves and ribbons, peace is a demanding job for over 100,000 United Nations Peacekeepers.
The first UN peacekeeping mission hails back to 1948. UN military observers were deployed to monitor the Armistice Agreement b/w Israel and its Arab neighbors. Since then, the Blue Helmets have been a driving force behind protecting civilians and resolving conflicts around the world. Guatemala, Namibia, Cambodia-- UN Peacekeepers go to places others simply can't or won't go.
This is what peace really is. It's 60 years of creating chances for peace to blossom. 60 years of overseeing elections and disarming ex-combatants. 60 years of proving that peace, like war, must be waged.

AMMAN, Jordan, 23 May 2008 -- The Baghdad Girls Primary in Iraq's Sadr City had only been occupied by students for a few months before violent clashes erupted between military forces and militia groups in the area.
When the smoke cleared, the school was virtually destroyed -- damaged by intense mortar and rocket fire. The school's headmistresses, Zainab Kadhum, and her staff had worked to ensure that all the girls got home safely, but they could not save what had only recently been a brand new space for Iraqi girls to receive a quality education amidst the insecurity plaguing their country.

A sample of sequences and images from the Iraq footage taken in April 2006 by Robert Nugent.
The Australian War Memorial has a long tradition and commitment to recording the history and service of the Australian Defence Force. Its collection includes the work of First World War cinematographers, Hubert Wilkins and Frank Hurley, as well as Damien Parer's iconic work from the Second World War. Robert Nugent is the first official cinematographer to be commissioned by the Memorial. Nugent was selected for his professional achievements and extensive experience filming observational documentaries in many of the world's remote regions. It was felt he would bring a unique set of skills to documenting the Australian military experience in Iraq, setting apart his footage from journalistic coverage. As well as creating a historical record for years to come, a key feature of the commission was to create material for the Memorial to use in its new Conflicts 1945 to Today galleries and in contemporary exhibitions.
Nugent's footage is a mix of on-location interviews, and image and sound, covering operations, training, living conditions, leisure activities, and the environment. To accomplish this, he was hosted by the Australian Army History Unit and lived with the troops. He also filmed from military aircraft and vehicles, sometimes involving using a remote camera. He later commented that the ASLAV gun mounts to which he attached his video camera were the best platforms he had ever used, owing to their amazing gyroscopic stability.
The footage includes scenes shot at Australian HQ in Baghdad where Australian Defence Force men and women are based who work at the Joint Task Force HQ; Anzac Cove in the International Zone in Baghdad; travel along Route Irish through the Red Zone (unsecure area); and Camp Smitty at Al Muthanna where the Australians were providing security for the Japanese Self Defence Force engineers.
Nugent's footage has considerable effect and gives a real sense of the day-to-day activities and experiences of the Australian soldiers.Robert Nugent is a Canberra-based cinematographer. On 2 December 2007 he was awarded the Best Film Debut at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam for his film, "End of the rainbow".

ENOUGH ROPE with Andrew Denton, ABC TV, 1 October, 2007. Miriam Margolyes is just a little different to most actors. She has done Dickens and she has done porn. She has been a penguin, a sheepdog and a glow-worm. You may also know her as Professor Sprout from Harry Potter.

All life forms do not hang on the judgement of one species. Sign US Animal Bill of Rights
All life forms do not hang on the judgement of one species. Sign US Animal Bill of Rights (international signatures welcome) http://www.aldf.org/billofrights/

From Animal Defense Legal Fund -
The struggle to end cruelty to animals is not an easy one. But there is something easy you can do right now to make a difference in the lives of abused animals. It's as quick and simple as typing in your name.
Through the Animal Bill of Rights, we (ADLF) are working to show Congress a groundswell of support for legislation that protects animals and recognizes their rights. Ultimately, we hope the petition will be a bill. In the meantime, the thousands of signatures on this petition send a clear message to our legislators that Americans strongly support legal protection for animals. When animal-related legislation is proposed, Congress will remember the huge number of signatures on the Animal Bill of Rights. With that in mind, they will cast a vote for the animals.
A Petition to the United States Congress
I, the undersigned American citizen, believe that animals, like all sentient beings, are entitled to basic legal rights in our society. Deprived of legal protection, animals are defenseless against exploitation and abuse by humans. As no such rights now exist, I urge you to pass legislation in support of the following basic rights for animals:
THE RIGHT of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect and abuse. THE RIGHT of laboratory animals not to be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments. THE RIGHT of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs. THE RIGHT of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. THE RIGHT of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically sufficient to a normal existence and self-sustaining species population. THE RIGHT of animals to have their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land.
============================================= Life as a phenomenon to be treasured, revered and respected. We, as vegans, do not see animals as either "The Enemy" to be subdued, or the Materials for Food, Fabric or Fun that were put on Earth for human use.
