The main Chicago hospitals that were scrutinized for "born alive abortions" were Christ Hospital (which performed between 10-20 per year) and Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center (which performed roughly 100 per year). Other hospitals have particpated in the practice across the nation as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that, before it was shut down by legislators, labor induction accounted for one-tenth of 1 percent of all abortions (Chicago Tribune, 9/29/99).

As the head of Illinois' Health and Human Resources Committee, Barack Obama was thoroughly informed about these hospitals before he voted to uphold their practices.
