Anti-hunters love to use Yellowstone National Park as an example that wolves can control an ungulate population. And sure wolves have reduced the park's elk herd by about 80 percent. But the wolves are not fulfilling their part of the natural predator-prey symbiotic relationship. In such a natural scheme, the predator population goes up and thereby causes the prey population to fall, and then the predators don't have enough prey to eat so a number of them starve to death. Then the prey population comes back and the cycle continues. But the Yellowstone wolves aren't waiting for the elk herd to make a comeback. No, they're leaving the park in packs and affecting ranchers and other residents in the surrounding states.
